Artifact & Response Series
Starting Point
A threshold, a window, a stud wall. Each can be conserved several defensible ways, and the choice between them changes the building. There is no quick means of putting those options side by side, so the decision usually gets made from habit.
Integrated Strategy
Three common conditions were selected, and each given its own trifold pamphlet setting out the competing approaches. The drawings were made by hand, then scanned and digitized for reproduction, keeping the character of the line while allowing the series to be printed at will. The format is deliberate. Closed, each pamphlet is three and a half by five inches and fits in a pocket. Open, it stands on its own or lies flat, so it can be read against the building it describes.
Lasting Impact
The series makes an abstract choice physical and portable. It can be carried to a site, opened in front of the condition in question, and used to compare approaches with a client or a trades person before anyone commits to one.
