Bonavista Coffee Company
Branding, Packaging Design
Bonavista Coffee Company, a coffee roaster based in Newfoundland, needed a visual identity and packaging system built to do double duty: clearly differentiate its coffee and espresso brewing methods and roast profiles, while speaking to both the casual drinker and the coffee connoisseur.
Our approach centered the story behind each coffee: the layout and hierarchy bring the farmer and place of origin to the forefront of each package, with extensive information on the back for the curious customer. Side panel illustrations for the espresso bag were drawn by artist Noah Bender, adding a handcrafted layer to the two package designs.
The result is a visual identity that reflects the forward-thinking nature of the company through simple pastel colours, while a giant “B” monogram nods to the region’s strong history of early European explorers and cartography. Two modern typefaces carry that contrast forward: a post-geometric sans, Halcyon, brings a bold, modern look, and a strong slab-serif, Artegra Slab, emphasizes the hard-working nature of the small community of Bonavista.
