Cape Spear Interpretive Cafe

Cape Spear National Historic Site sits on the most easterly point of land in Canada and is home to the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. The former Lightkeeper's Residence needed a concept for adaptive reuse as an Interpretive Cafe: a way to tell the story of maritime culture through engaging content that demanded careful balance between visitor experience and circulation.

That compact footprint narrowed the interpretive content to a single storyline: the eight lighthouse keepers who tended Cape Spear over 150 years and five generations. The resulting design carries that story into both the physical space and the brand identity, organized into five key interpretive areas: a timeline of the Cantwell family's lineage, the changing role of a lightkeeper, display cases for artifacts, quotes from family members about their living conditions, and large photographs depicting their life over time.

The result is a concept design for a cafe experience built to engage visitors throughout their visit, offering a sense of what life was like at this isolated outpost. It turns a limited footprint into a focused, memorable story.
